Bimini is a slim chain of islands where almost every good day involves a boat. North Bimini holds Alice Town, marinas and the main resort area; South Bimini holds the airport, quieter stays and several dive operations. The deep Gulf Stream runs just offshore, explaining the island’s outsized reputation for sharks, dolphins and big-game fish.
A brief history
Lucayan people lived across The Bahamas before European enslavement and forced removal devastated their communities. Bimini later drew wreckers, fishermen, rum-runners and writers; Ernest Hemingway’s visits in the 1930s remain part of local lore. Maritime work and close ties to Florida still shape island life.
What it is most known for
Seasonal great hammerheads, wild Atlantic spotted dolphins, the SS Sapona, exceptional fishing, Radio Beach and its position only about 50 miles east of Florida.
Geography
North and South Bimini are separated by a narrow channel. Everything feels close on land, while the surrounding bank, reef edge and Gulf Stream open into a much larger marine world.

Winter is the signature season.
December–February
Drier air, comfortable temperatures and the heart of the great-hammerhead window. Cold fronts can cancel boats, so keep a spare day.
March–May
Hammerhead season can continue into April while water and air temperatures rise. Easter and spring-break demand reward early reservations.
June–August
July is hot and humid, with warm water, Goombay celebrations and growing tropical-weather and sargassum risk.
September–November
The quietest stretch overlaps peak storm risk. Choose flexible reservations and leave generous margins around ferries and flights.
Is Bimini hurricane-safe?
No. The islands are low-lying and exposed. Use named-storm coverage, refundable reservations and a realistic disruption plan.

Fly—or cross from Fort Lauderdale.
South Bimini Airport (BIM)
Flights arrive on South Bimini. Continue by taxi to the dock, then use the short local ferry to North Bimini for Alice Town and the main resort district. Confirm late-arrival ferry timing with your hotel.
Fort Lauderdale → North Bimini
Baleària Caribbean publishes crossings from Port Everglades to Fisherman’s Village at Bimini Bay in roughly two hours. A passport is required; sailing days, terminal details and check-in deadlines change.
No dependable Bimini ↔ Grand Bahama tourist ferry
The two islands have separate Fort Lauderdale ferry routes, but not a reliable daily passenger service between each other. Connect by a verified domestic flight or through Fort Lauderdale or Nassau; never assume the transfer exists for your dates.

Regional monitoring shows an exceptionally active 2026 sargassum season. Bimini’s narrow geography means wind and current can create sharply different conditions within a short distance. Sharks are the headline.
Deep-sea fishing
Bimini is one of the Bahamas’ historic big-game centers. The Gulf Stream and nearby drop-offs put tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, sailfish, blue marlin and swordfish within reach of Alice Town and South Bimini. This is a genuine fishing destination.
Best timing: Wahoo is favored in the cooler months, mahi and tuna often improve in spring and early summer, and billfish timing varies with current and bait. Gulf Stream crossings and offshore runs require a properly equipped charter boat.
Wild dolphins
Captains search the open bank for Atlantic spotted dolphins. Encounters are normally snorkel-based and entirely on the animals’ terms; choose boats that limit pursuit and crowding.
Reefs, walls & wrecks
Victory Reef, Tuna Alley and Bimini Wall add coral heads, swim-throughs and Gulf Stream blue. SS Sapona works for divers and snorkelers in settled conditions.
Sailing & fishing
Bimini is a natural Florida landfall, but Gulf Stream weather routing deserves respect. Bonefishing and offshore fishing are island signatures; verify permits, seasons and catch rules.
Surfing
